Cleaning up our Manitoba Lakes

Blog by Greg Hamilton, REALTOR® | November 3rd, 2010

Last night I went to a great Public Forum on cleaning up our Manitoba Lakes. This event was hosted by Jon Gerrard (Manitoba Liberal Leader and MLA River Heights) and a presentation was done by Diane Orihel, member of a University of Alberta team who is currently studying the algal blooms on Killarney Lake. Diane gave a great overview on the science behind the blooms and how the root problems need to be addressed ASAP before it is too late. It is not only local run off, effluent or natural sources that are causing the problems, a large source of the nutrient loading is coming from our neighbours. Diane was frank with the group of 50(ish) that there is not enough analysis done by the Province of Manitoba to determine a course of action. By the end of the evening, I think those in attendance were discouraged but motivated to speak up to get some action on this critical issue. To get action we must speak up. Tell your MLA what you think and demand action on controlling pollution and cleaning our Manitoba lakes.
