It is approved! Well, it has the support and go ahead from the City Centre Community Committee. The City gave the Fort Rouge Yards townhouse and condo project the approval to move forward at the Public Hearing on the Subdivision and Rezoning meeting last night. This is the first major transit oriented development in Winnipeg and it will break ground next year - maybe.
Any project like this will bring opposition and concern by local area residents. In this case they had great points that mainly focused on traffic concerns. There are 900 townhouse, condo and commercial units planned for the Fort Rouge Yards and there will be some details regarding managing the traffic that needs to be addressed. Overall, I think this is a great opportunity for Winnipeg to move forward focussing on Transit oriented developments. Lets reduce the urban sprawl and develop density and a rich pedestrian oriented community.
It will be interesting to see how this project develops. This could be the first step in other community projects along the 'future' transit corridor. What do you think? Would you live here?
