Speed Limit Change on Academy

Blog by Greg Hamilton, REALTOR® | November 16th, 2010

There is a City Centre Community Committee meeting tonight at 5:00pm on changing the speed limit on Academy Road from 50km/h to 60 km/h. I think maybe it makes sense on parts of Academy but there are sections that we should be trying to calm traffic rather than encourage traffic to speed up.

Academy Road is a neighbourhood shopping district like Corydon and Osborne. The areas between Oak and Brock and between Beaverbrook and Renfrew are always busy with cars trying to park and people trying to cross the street. We should encourage residents to shop at the boutiques and eat at the great restaurants. We should be encouraging the improvement to the Academy Business zone rather than catering to the vehicle. Why would anyone support an increase in the speed limit in this area?

What do you think? Here is the agenda and back up information for the meeting:

** UPDATE **
The committee shelved this item as it should have never made it to the Committee agenda. It was put on the agenda because one person requested the speed change to City Works. It is amazing how one persons actions can get an overwhelming response from the public.
